This book analyzes family farming in the Itamarati I Settlement, located in the municipality of Ponta Porã, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, with attention to its social impacts, the conditions for remaining in the countryside, and its relationship with regional development. Originating from a master’s research project developed within the Graduate Program in Regional Development and Productive Systems at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul, the study focuses on titled settled farmers and non-titled occupant farmers, considering their trajectories, forms of productive organization, and living conditions. The work discusses the foundations of modern agriculture, alternative agriculture, and family farming, situating rural settlements within the context of Brazilian agrarian reform and public policies aimed at rural areas. The research uses the APOIA SOCIAL methodology to evaluate indicators related to work, economy, health, management, and administration, allowing comparisons among social movements and the groups studied. By examining data from the Itamarati I Settlement, the book highlights the potentialities, weaknesses, and challenges faced by farming families, especially regarding income generation, quality of life, productive organization, technical assistance, and permanence in the territory. More than a case study, the book contributes to reflections on the limits and possibilities of family farming as a strategy for regional development, emphasizing the importance of public policies, extension actions, the strengthening of social movements, and the recognition of the subjects who build everyday life in the countryside.
