Synopsis

This book analyzes the relationship between football and Batllism in the construction of Uruguayan national identity between 1897 and 1930. Based on the analysis of the newspaper El Día, it examines how Batllist political discourse appropriated football as a symbolic tool for social integration, modernization, and national affirmation. The study highlights the role of sport in shaping a narrative of Uruguayan exceptionalism within the Latin American context, articulating political, cultural, and identity dimensions.
