Black Awareness Day with Nikolly, by Alessandra dos Santos da Silva, is a children’s book that values Black culture, representation and anti-racist education. The story follows Nikolly, a curious girl proud of her identity, as she experiences school activities about Black Awareness Day. Through her teacher’s explanations, Nikolly learns about the struggle of Black people, the importance of Zumbi dos Palmares, African heritage and cultural expressions present in food, music, dance, fashion and family traditions. By sharing her own story with her classmates, Nikolly shows that Black culture is alive in everyday life and should be celebrated with respect and pride. The book highlights childhood as a space for learning, belonging and building a fairer, more diverse and more conscious society.
